Yr6 Term 1.1.2 Risks and Reputation

Welcome back to Year 6 Computing! 💬

Today we are exploring our digital footprint—the trail of information you leave behind on the internet. We will learn how to protect our online reputation, keep our private data safe, and discover how easily online messages can be misunderstood. Let’s dive in!

Step 1: Time to Type! ⌨️

  • Click here to warm up your fingers: Start Typing Practice.
  • Today’s typing challenge focuses on digital chat rules and different tones of voice. Remember to focus on getting the letters exactly right before trying to type fast!

Step 2: The “T-Shirt Rule” & Emoji Design 👕

Have you ever heard of the T-Shirt Rule? It is a great way to protect your online reputation: “If you wouldn’t put a post, comment, or photo on a t-shirt and walk down the high street for everyone to see, you shouldn’t post it online!”

Can you describe yourself using only safe, public information? Use the digital canvas below to draw an emoji t-shirt design showing off your hobbies and interests. Remember: no private information (like your address, full name, or school)! When you are done, click “Download Design”.

Step 3: What Does That Mean?! 🤔

  • Show your downloaded t-shirt design to your partner. Can they guess what your emojis mean?
  • Think about how easily symbols and text can be misunderstood online. Does the 🔥 emoji mean “danger,” or does it mean someone is doing a great job? What about the ✌️ fingers—is it peace, victory, or the number two? Your digital footprint can easily be misinterpreted!

Step 4: Adventure in Interland 🛡️

It is time to put your positive communication skills to the test!

  • Click here to play: Play Interland.
  • Your specific mission today is to travel straight to the Kind Kingdom. Collect positive shields, block the cyberbullies, and practice your best digital etiquette to protect everyone’s online reputation.
  • If you finish early, write a two-sentence review of the game’s message in your notebook.

Step 5: Log Off and Reflect 👋

Before you shut down, think about how you will present yourself online.

  • Exit Ticket: Tell your partner one way a misunderstood emoji or a poorly thought-out post could accidentally hurt someone’s feelings or damage their digital footprint.
  • Log out securely and tidy your desk space!
