Yr3 Term 1.1.7 Complex Patterns

Welcome to Year 3 Computing — Lesson 7! 🔄⚡

Today we are taking our coding skills to the next level on Code.org! We will explore how Loops (repeating code) and Events (code that runs when something happens, like clicking a button) work together to create automated patterns and interactive programs!

Step 1: Keyboard Warm-up ⌨️ (10 Mins)

  • Click here to warm up your fingers on our typing studio: Start Typing Practice on Ndovu.
  • Practice typing key coding terms: loop, event, trigger, repeat, pattern, nested, and event-driven. Keep your posture tall and keystrokes light!

Step 2: Interactive Loops & Events Studio 🎨 (25 Mins)

Use the embedded module below to experiment with event triggers, predict how loop algorithms behave, and design a complex repeating pattern!

Step 1: What is an Event Trigger?

An Event is an action that tells the computer when to start running code (like clicking a mouse button or tapping a key). Test how different event triggers run loop algorithms below:

Click an Event Trigger below to execute its loop algorithm:

Click an Event Trigger button above to see the code execute…

Step 3: Advanced Loops & Events Puzzles on Code.org 🚀 (15 Mins)

Now let’s open Code.org to practice using event blocks and complex repeat loops!

🔑 Continue on Code.org:

Click the button below to sign in and launch your puzzles:

Launch Code.org Sign In ➔

Challenge: Try using a loop inside another loop (a nested loop) to draw a full flower or starburst pattern!

Step 4: Log Off and Reflect 👋 (10 Mins)

  • Exit Ticket: What is an ‘Event’ in computer coding? (An action like a click or key press that tells the computer when to run specific code!)
  • Log out securely from your PC and ensure your workstation is left clean and tidy!
